3 Common Types of Roofing Materials

When choosing the right roofing material for your home there are several factors you’ll need to consider, including the cost, durability, energy efficiency, and maintenance. Although choosing the best materials for your needs is important it is equally important to hire an experienced roofing company to help you choose the appropriate materials as well as to ensure the new roof is installed properly. To help you choose the roofing material that best suits your needs, here are three of the most common options.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common type of roofing material is asphalt shingles; in fact, about three out of every four homes have a roof with asphalt shingles. This type of roofing material typically lasts about 15-30 years depending on the climate and type of asphalt shingle used. For instance, 3-tab asphalt shingles are the least expensive, but they wear out quicker than architectural shingles, which can often last as long as 30 years. Asphalt shingles are available in a wide range of colors, they are inexpensive and recyclable when taken to a recycling center specifically designed to take in asphalt shingles.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing is one of the most common types of roofing materials for a number of reasons, including its ability to provide energy efficiency; it’s fire-resistant, doesn’t absorb water, and holds up excellent against the elements. The primary downfall with metal roofing is the cost. It is more expensive than asphalt shingles, and it is more difficult to install than asphalt shingles. However, a metal roof requires very little maintenance and will last 50 years or more. Another benefit of metal roofing is that not only is it recyclable, but the materials used are often themselves recycled materials.

Slate Roofing

Slate roofing is one of the most durable and longest-lasting types of roofing materials available. In most situations, a slate roof can often last between 75-150 years; however, it is also one of the most expensive options. Slate is also extremely heavy, so it’s important to ensure the structure of your home is strong enough to handle the weight. The good news is there are synthetic slate options available that are significantly lighter, but look like real slate, and they are very durable. Slate, whether it is real or synthetic, must be installed by an experienced roofer to avoid the risk of potential water problems.

While choosing the roofing materials that provide aesthetic appeal is important, there is more to choosing the best roof. So, if it’s time to replace the roof on your home, the first step is to contact an experienced roofing contractor to give you an estimate. The contractor will be able to recommend the best option for your needs, including the slope of your roof, the budget, and the climate in your area.
